Youth Rugby Laws & Regulations

Southern California Youth Rugby uses the following youth rugby laws and guidelines. These are modified rugby laws have been created and implemented to make the game safe and enjoyable for youth of all ages and offer a pathway to full tackle 15 a side rugby.

Age Eligibility

For the 2008 youth rugby season ages are determined by the age the player was on September 1st 2007.  
 
Under 8 on Sept 1st 2007 = U8

Under 10 on Sept 1st 2007 = U10

Under 12 on Sept 1st 2007 = U12

Under 14 on Sept 1st 2007 = U14

Under 16 on Sept 1st 2007 = U16

Under 19 on Sept 1st 2007 and enrolled in a Southern California high school = High School Boys and High School Girls

Youth Non-Contact Rugby

Non-contact rugby in Southern California starts as early as preschool and develops the basic rugby skills before full contact is introduced. Youth non-contact rugby is usually played as 7 a side rugby. Laws can be downloaded here.
U12 Rugby
U12 rugby introduces tackling with teams playing rugby with 10 players on the field.

U14 Rugby

U14 develops the scrum and lineout in modified 12 a side rugby. U14 Girls play with 7 players on the field.
U16 Rugby
U16 further develops tackle rugby and plays 15 a side rugby. U16 Girls play with 10 players on the field.
HS Boys and HS Girls
HS Boys and HS Girls play full 15 a side rugby.

Listed in this document are requirements for participation in youth rugby (contact) for the 2008 season.
Match Reports
All HS, U16 and U14 teams are required to present a completed match report to the referee PRIOR to kick-off. All players must have their CIPP prior to playing any match. Teams are required to use the SCRFU Match Report System.
