Tony has spent 30+ years playing, coaching and administering rugby. His 10+ years of coaching include holding the post of Youth Director for Belmont Shore Rugby Club, being Head Coach of Wilson High School, and coaching Belmont Shore's men's 7s program for many years. He has invested significant time developing and implementing a tackle safety program for all coaches and athletes in Belmont Shore Youth Rugby.
Active in the rugby world for over 20 years, Kevin has filled multiple roles throughout his career, including Head Coach - Santa Barbara Olympic Development Academy, Attack Coach - Sacramento Express (Pro Rugby), Skills Coach - USA U20’s (Men), Manager - USA Men’s Rugby World Cup (2011 & 2015), and D1A College Commissioner. Kevin's most recent endeavor is Rugby PhD, a multi-faceted online coaching portal.
Gavin joined SCYR in May 2014 as our Operations Coordinator. Most of his time these days is spent on competition management, athlete eligibility and competition policy compliance. In addition, he coaches several boys and girls high school and club teams, including Tri-City and Mission Vista, as well as playing with the North County men's club.
Lise Bernard, Founder and President of TriMastery Group, is a thought leader in group dynamics, advanced team performance, and the culture of excellence. Her work is based on over 25 years of independent research and practical application at all levels of competition. The principals of ‘Mastery’ have been applied successfully by athletes and coaches of all types, including Phil Jackson and John Wooden. She has an extensive background in helping coaches and athletes discover how to perform as a team and reach peak performance levels beyond their expectations.
Lise has worked extensively with the Stanford based Positive Coaching Alliance, provided “Coaching for Mastery” training to Youth Rugby clubs and High School Athletic programs in Southern California. She is a founder and past Board member of Explorer Elementary School, a nationally recognized Charter school in San Diego, focusing on Emotional and Social Intelligence and high Academic performance.
Leah has been refereeing since 2006 and has risen to be an International, PRO and National Panel referee. Highlights of her career to date include the 7s Rugby World Cup in 2013, in which she refereed the women's final, and the Women's Rugby World Cup in 2014. In her non-rugby life, Leah owns her own pet services business, works as a sales rep for Rugby Athletic and recently started officiating high school football. Leah lives in St. Paul, MN.
One of the most experienced and successful rugby coaches in the United States, Jack has been the UC Berkeley Men's Rugby Head Coach since 1984, winning 23 Collegiate National Championships in 15s and another 5 Championships in 7s. In addition, Jack led the USA Men's National Team (15s) as Head Coach from 1993-1999, including the 1995 and 1999 Rugby World Cups. He is a frequent presenter in both academia and the corporate world, specializing in organizational behavior.
Sarah is the Lead Staff Attorney of the Public Law Center's Community Organizations Legal Assistance Project, which provides free legal advice and representation to qualifying Orange County non-profit organizations and small businesses. Additionally, she teaches seminars on how to start a nonprofit organization and regularly collaborates with community nonprofit technical assistance providers to hold a number of other legal education seminars.
A longtime rugby referee and administrator, Phil has been President of the Southern California Rugby Referees Society since 2014. He is also a USA Rugby High Performance Referee Coach and a Performance Reviewer. In addition, Phil is involved in the Rugby Business Executive Association, sitting on the Leadership and Regional Development Committees. In his non-rugby life, he manages Economic Development and Nuclear Waste programs for Clark County, Nevada.
Elizabeth joined SCYR in 2016 as our Membership Manager. Her many varied duties include providing top notch member service, assisting with athlete registration and compliance, supporting all SCYR events and Championships and providing general support to the Executive Director. In addition, all five of her children play rugby!
Bert Moeller has been involved with youth rugby in Southern California since 2000. For the past 13 years he has been a referee and now sits on the board of the Southern California Rugby Referee Society. Bert has always been a strong advocate for the advancement of referees at the youth level and has worked with SCYR for several years as an allocator and educator helping the youth game solve its referee shortage issues.
David played rugby from age 5 to 52, mostly in Canterbury, New Zealand. More recently he has been an active coach and administrator in Southern California, as President of the Mustangs club in San Diego for the last five years, Director of Rugby for Torrey Pines High School, prior SCYR Member Council representative and former Treasurer and recently elected President of SCYR's Board of Directors.
Johnny has over 25 years of rugby-playing experience, including the top levels of the game in his native New Zealand and 6 years playing for Belmont Shore in the Super League. He is currently Belmont Shore's U12 and Boys U14 Head Coach and has been a key participant in the devleopment of Belmont Shore's tackling safety program, with a focus on introducing tackling to younger players.
A Kiwi, Ray is a former President of SCYR and has been a rugby coach and administrator in Southern California for over 25 years. He is the founder and owner of the AdeptSoft software company, whose products include the MatchApt system used by SCYR for athlete registration and competition management.
Salty has coached USA Boys Age Grade National Teams since 2003, including the U19s, the U20s, and is currently Head Coach of the Boys High School All-American team and the Director of the Eagle Impact Rugby Academy. He has been coaching full time since 2013, following a 20 year career as an educator. Salty holds an undergraduate degree in Sports Science from Loughborough University, England and a Masters in Secondary Education from Arizona State University.
Ramsey has been coaching rugby for over 20 years. A Level 300 certified coach coach, Ramsey is currently the Senior Head Coach for Belmont Shore Youth Rugby and runs all coach development programs for the club, including the Rugby Discipline program, which all Belmont Shore Youth Rugby coaches and athletes complete.
Kurt Weaver fell in love with rugby as an athlete in high school later at Bowling Green State University and has been working towards filling every major role in the sport since then. He began coaching in 2004 and rose up to the Backs Coach position with the USA Women’s U20 National Team. Not content with just coaching, he took up the whistle as well and is now regularly refereeing at the highest levels, including the Women’s Premier League, PRO Rugby, and is USA Rugby's most capped international 15s referee with 14 tests. Kurt has been USA Rugby’s Youth & HS Director since 2011.
Alexandra joined SCYR in late August, 2013, as the organization's first full time employee. She began playing rugby at Harvard, before moving on to club rugby with Beantown and the Berkeley All-Blues. Alexandra represented the USA for ten years and three Women's Rugby World Cups, retiring as the captain of the Eagles. Having hung up her cleats, she worked as the Eagles' forward's coach through two additional World Cups, along with stints coaching the Pacific Coast Grizzlies, the Berkeley All-Blues and the San Diego Surfers. Alexandra brings a diverse business background to SCYR, with experience in the sports, management consulting and construction industries. Formerly USA Rugby's Women's High Performance Manager responsible for all Women's National Team programs, Alexandra has enjoyed the transition to the youth level of the game and the opportunity to grow this amazing game at the grass roots level. As SCYR's Executive Director, she is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations and managing the strategic growth of the organization.
